Safe House for abandoned and orphaned children (40 children)

Background of The Children

Due to the economic crisis in Burma, most people left their home and became migrant workers in Thailand. They did not have access to basic health care and social services. They have an overwhelming lack of knowledge about reproductive health and prevention from the sexually transmitted diseases. Young girls and women are forced to become pregnant, and subsequently they have high rates of pregnancy termination. However, high infant mortality and abandoning children are more common consequences. Some parents leave their children as they are physically or mentally unable to care for them. Some mothers are HIV positive and die after they give birth. These abandoned or orphaned children have no place to go other than the Safe House at SAW. However, there are many abandoned or orphaned children who do not make it to the Safe House and become the victims of the drug or human trafficking.
